Nestled in the Andes Mountains, Andahuaylas is in one of the poorest regions in Peru. Seventy percent of the population has no access to electricity, running water or proper sanitation services.
Many children in the outlying villages cannot attend school so they don’t know how to read or write. Infant and maternal mortality rates are high and malnutrition, disease, alcoholism and domestic abuse are rampant.
Even children in stable households must often fend for themselves as parents travel great distances to find work.
In 2009 the Friends of Peru Children’s Home Center officially joined the ministry of Kids Alive. This Home Center opened to help poor, abused and abandoned children and those who lived too far from school.
Currently the Home Center offers needy kids shelter, nutritious food, clothing, education help and basic job skill training as a cross between a Care Center and Children’s Home. Most important, they learn about Jesus’ love and the good plans He has for their lives.
Both construction and paperwork are being done in order to establish the ministry as an official Children’s Home once again while maintaining the Care Center ministry for children in extreme poverty.
